Detention Center
The Hardin County Correctional Center is a detention center or county jail intended for- the incarceration of persons charged with state or local crimes
- persons serving sentences under court order
- persons waiting trial
- persons waiting extradition to another jurisdiction or state
- detainees from other local agencies under jurisdictional agreement
The Hardin County Law Enforcement Center was completed in July 2000 and houses the Sheriff's Office, E911 Communications Center, and the Correctional Center, which is the facility that constitutes the county jail.
Immigration & Customs Enforcement
The jail is also a detention facility for the Department of Homeland Security Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Therefore, this facility is required to meet both state and federal detention standards as monitored by the Iowa Department of Corrections and the ICE Inspections Bureau. The jail proudly meets and exceeds those standards and enjoys a good relationship with many different agencies.Detainees
The center holds a wide variety of detainees on the local, state, and federal levels. One may encounter a local citizen charged with a relatively minor charge to a state offender waiting a return to prison to a federal immigration detainee awaiting deportation, depending on classification status.The foreign national population is a diverse group in itself which represents a large number of foreign countries. The correctional staff learn to understand many different cultures, values, and habits of a vast world-wide population.

The secure area of the center consists of:- 8 units or pods and 3 holding cells
- Booking room
- Commissary room
- Control room
- Library
- Medical office
Pod Security Levels
Within the eight pods, a variety of detainees are housed in three security levels:- Routine Supervision
- Closely Supervised
- Special Status
Care is also given to separate different genders, court status, and juveniles.
Pod Facilities
The center contains 90 beds and room for 8 detainees in the holding areas. Each pod has fixtures such as a television, shower, tables and chairs, and a telephone.Detainees who are not under disciplinary action for misbehavior are allowed these amenities from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. During the night hours, the detainees are required to remain in their individual or group sleeping areas.
