Hardin County is re-instituting their countywide embargo of 5 tons per axle for all vehicles on non-paved roadways. This embargo will be in effect until noon on Monday, April 8th.
After our initial embargo there were many questions, so to answer a few:
Can I get an exemption?
No, unless there is some sort of emergency service that needed a heavy load.
How can I keep my grain/livestock operations going?
Either travel with non-full loads, pull the loads with a tractor or track based equipment, or use a combination of both exercises.
This embargo is not meant to hurt our local economy, it is meant to preserve our roadways so that they can be traveled on by the citizens that reside on them, as well as our mail carriers and school buses. The roadways are still very saturated from the snow melt, and there remains multiple feet of frost below the ground that will continue to push upward and keep the roadways wet.
As soon as possible, Hardin County will continue to haul rock and maintain the gravel roads. Please be patient with the county employees you see working. They're required to do a little extra work during an event like this in order to document everything properly. This will allow Hardin County to receive financial help from FEMA if the disaster is accepted by the federal government.
The current map of our damaged roadways is staggering and would take approximately 2.5 years operating how Hardin County has in the past. The road crews will continue hauling to what they deem the worst spots first. We will avoid rocking complete miles until we feel comfortable with the situation of the individual spots.
Feel free to contact the Secondary Roads department by phone at 641-858-5058 to determine if your roadway has been added to our map, but no time frames for repair will be given on specific roads. The maps may be added to the website in the future, but they are updated at a rate that would make it difficult to keep the website up to date.
Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time,
Hardin County Engineer
